Saki OST (ep. 1, 00:29)
I picked up the first episode of Saki by chance, due to the favorable twitterings it received. This first piece really caught my attention. It’s an ojou-sama piece, but damn is it well done. I was yelling to zzeroparticle the other day about Mizuki Nana’s lack of creativity with dynamics, but this piece nails it, especially with the harp. In fact, it constantly crescendos and decrescendos so much that it was kind of a pain to notate – I had to come up with a rather backhanded way to get the right sound.

That’s from penultimate measure in the harp. Well, it wouldn’t have to be so confusing if the crescendo function actually worked, but this’ll do.
At first, I didn’t know if the glockenspiel (awesome word) doubled the melody for the entire thing – I ended up changing the MIDI patch to music box since there’s too many overtones in the glockenspiel patch in high registers – but the sparse melody doubling fits very well too.
The melody itself is very nice too, it flows beautifully and hits the peak at the F#dim7 which is accompanied by the slowing down.
I can’t say it’s “out of place”, given the nature of Saki (GARmbling and fanservice?), so you’d think that excellently arranged chamber music could find another anime…but hey, I’m not complaining.
