Ristorante Paradiso ep1-3 OST sampling

Some bits from the first three episodes. I didn’t finish most of these, just a sampling.

ep1, 3:23

One evident thing from Ristorante is the abundance of pieces in a triple meter. It’s a shame that MIDI can’t realize all the beautiful subtleties of an acoustic guitar, because the nylon strings are what give much of the OST its charm.

ep1, 15:30

Didn’t bother with the 2nd part, but the first part is really “dance-ish”.

ep1, 18:00

I dig this one, a nice bossa-esque guitar (not quite, though) and a simple piano melody.

ep2, 5:44

I swear there’s an identical track in Aria, at least with the beginning chords. Using a b13 going into the third of the tonic isn’t uncommon, and it adds a very effective comical effect. The second part of this tune is nice, with strong harmonies, and a few more instruments I didn’t feel like transcribing. Also, the trill is really cute.

ep2, 21:01

This is a nice one too. It has some more chords with upper extensions typical of jazz, and the last chord is wow! Nice! The notes are F-C-F-A-B-E. It’s like an Fmajor barre chord on the first fret, but left up your index finger so the B and E strings are open. I guess technically it’s an Fmaj7b5 which could resolve back (tritone substitution) into an Emajor modulation, despite the tune being in Bminor. A very nice touch indeed.

ep3, 8:11

I dig this one as well. It’s pretty similar to the others, though there’s a nice B section I didn’t feel like doing.

Most of the pieces in episode 3 are of the dance-ish, upbeat kind, there’s an “impressionist” piano piece (16:33, 14:46), at least it’s vaguely reminiscent of Debussy-ish color flourishes, I guess in the sense that tempo plays little part (thus making them terribly difficult to transcribe) and that they’re rather harmonically complex, which is a refreshing change from most anime OST. This particular piece is also interesting because it’s basically the same thing, I think the second playing of it is a slightly different arrangement and may be longer, but how often do you hear the same OST piece in the span of two minutes? I’m guessing it’s someone’s “theme”, or the piece itself has some thematic significance.

Overall, most of the pieces will feature guitar, piano, clarinet, violin and drums. Oddly, I didn’t hear any bass. Probably the thing I love the most is brushes. Brushes give a tune a really nice, laid back feeling, even at moderately high tempos. They add the percussive feel, but aren’t as intrusive as sticks. And it’s all pretty obvious, given how jazzy the OST is. ANN didn’t have any information on the composer[s], though BigN informed me that it’s by ko-ko-ya, a group that has a Choro Club member in it, Choro Club being the group that composed the music for Aria. Check out their Myspace with steaming tunes! Do eet do eet nao!
